Victoria Park bowls wheelchair puts Geezer ace Mac the Jack back on the green.

It was John McGlaughlin’s first time back on the bowls green for 3 years. In his bowling heyday ace player John went by the nom de guerre Mac the Jack: on the evidence of this trip, he hasn’t lost his deadly aim.

Visiting Victoria Park Bowls Club [ in June ], the Geezers used the bowling aids funded for the club by the Tower Hamlets Mayor’s small grants programme, Clarion and Action for Bow. The adapted Bowls Royce wheelchair meant Geezer Dennis was able to try his hand, and John could be on the green bowling again after a long interval.

On this visit other Geezers and their partners used equipment that makes it easy to lift, throw and push bowls even with a bad back. Geezer Richard is a regular lawn bowls player who also has Parkinson’s and has found that the club’s special walker takes the fatigue out of going up and down the green between ends.

Mac the Jack summed up the afternoon: ’We’ll be back before the season ends,’ he said.

A big thank you to Rick Jory for the excellent pictures.

The Geezers and VPBC are grateful to Clarion for their ongoing support.
