The Reading Room at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives was officially reopened on the 21st September by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, following extensive restoration work.
The Reading Room is where the public come to research local historic collections and the Geezers welcome its return having had cause to use it many times.
The room’s most notable feature is its highly ornate decorative plaster ceiling, part of which collapsed overnight on 14 January of this year, since which time the room has been closed to the public.
Specialist contractors, employed by Tower Hamlets Council, have worked tirelessly to restore the ceiling to its former glory, as befits a building which is Grade II listed; and much beloved by residents and visitors alike.
The room was a 1902 adaptation to the original 1860 building, made when it was converted to a library from a Vestry Hall. It is thought that this is the first time the ceiling has been redecorated in nearly 50 years
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “The Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives is a precious resource for the borough, and one which many hold dear. I am delighted therefore to see the Reading Room restored to its former glory, and am thankful to our highly skilled contractors for carrying out such a professional job. We look forward to welcoming the local community back to this wonderful place, and for Tower Hamlets residents to continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”
