In scorching heat, the Geezers successfully completed their sponsored walk down the River Lea from Tottenham Hale to Stepney.
Our end point was New Belvedere House on White Horse Road, London E1, where Veterans Aid guides previously homeless residents from dependence and social isolation towards empowerment and independence.
Every year the Geezers walk for a charity close to the club’s members — last year it was Headway East London, in 2023 it was The Alzheimer’s Society. We support causes that mean something to us and with ex-servicemen in our ranks Veterans Aid with its local profile in the Geezers’ manor was an obvious choice.
This wouldn’t have been a Geezer outing without at least a couple of pub stops, and we were all pleased to see first The Anchor & Hope at Clapton with its uniquely stunning views across the expanse of the Lea River marshes, followed by a lunch break at The Princess Of Wales.

From there on it was Stepney nonstop, first over well-trodden ground by Fish Island and the Olympic Park, then past the Bow Locks’ less familiar industrial archaeology with its dramatic 1930s footbridge, and on into the Limehouse Cut. At this point under a beating sun some remarked that the Foreign Legionnaire experience was more immediate than the British Army veteran’s. But in the end we made it to a welcome at White Horse Road followed by the reward of a well-earned pint among the wider Geezer group at The Old Ship, always a Geezer favourite.
